The Partnership between South Tyneside Council and BT began in October 2008 when a 10 year, £184m regeneration contract was signed, which will create up to 1,250 new jobs in the area.

The new jobs created will be housed in a new business centre in South Shields and a leased business centre in Jarrow. Once built, in the third year of the partnership, the South Shields site will be BT South Tyneside’s corporate headquarters and host BT’s National Local Government Centre of Excellence.

Already successfully secured is investment by one of India’s largest technology companies Tech Mahindra who have established their UK Centre of Excellence in South Tyneside in the Jarrow business centre.

In addition BT South Tyneside will provide new training and employment opportunities to the local residents, and is engaging closely with local schools, colleges and firms to help achieve the physical and economic regeneration of the borough.

Under the contract, we have committed to supporting the Council’s service delivery excellence objective by improving the economy and efficiency of services without compromising on quality. In order to do this, we are investing in large scale transformation projects designed to meet this objective and to support the Council in retaining its four star status.

In order to do this, South Tyneside Council asked us to manage customer services, employee support and development, finance, ICT, procurement and revenues and benefits, on their behalf.

The Council’s quest to deliver improved services is guided by their strategic priority to become a prosperous and enriched metropolitan borough where its citizens want to live, work, learn and be supported to reach their full potential.
